Asphalt Resurfacing: A New Surface Over a Sound Base
Resurfacing lays a new layer of asphalt over an existing driveway. When the base underneath is still sound it delivers a new surface for considerably less than a full replacement. When the base has failed it is money thrown away, so the assessment matters more than the work.
When an overlay works
The base has to be structurally intact. Good candidates show surface level problems: oxidation, raveling, isolated cracks, general wear. The driveway still sits at the right level and does not move under load.
Bad candidates show base failure: potholes that keep returning, sections that have sunk, alligator cracking spread across large areas, or standing water after rain. An overlay on any of those reflects the same failures through to the new surface, usually within one or two winters.
What happens during resurfacing
Existing cracks are cleaned and filled so they are less likely to reflect through. Badly failed spots get cut out and rebuilt first.
Edges are usually milled where the driveway meets the garage, the street or a walkway, so the finished surface still sits at the right height instead of creating a step or a lip that traps water.
The new layer is laid and compacted hot, typically an inch and a half to two inches once compacted.

How long does a resurfaced driveway last?
An overlay on a sound base typically gives ten to fifteen years, against fifteen to twenty for a full replacement.
The shortfall exists because you inherit whatever is underneath. On a driveway with a genuinely good base the difference is small and the cost saving is large.
Will old cracks come through a new overlay?
Some may eventually, and this is called reflective cracking. Preparation reduces it considerably: cleaning and filling existing cracks, and cutting out and rebuilding sections that have failed structurally.
If a driveway is widely cracked in connected patterns, the honest answer is that an overlay will not hold and replacement is the right spend.
