Stamped and Decorative Concrete Patios and Walkways
Stamped concrete presses a texture and pattern into the surface while it is still workable, producing the look of stone, slate, brick or wood plank in a continuous poured slab. It costs less than the material it imitates and it has no joints for weeds to find.
How stamped concrete is made
The slab is poured and finished as normal, over the same compacted base any concrete needs.
Color is applied either through the mix as integral color or on the surface as a color hardener. Integral color runs all the way through, so a chip does not expose grey concrete underneath.
A release agent goes down to stop the stamps sticking and to add a secondary accent tone, and the pattern is pressed in before the concrete sets. Timing is unforgiving. Too early and the impression closes back up, too late and it will not take.
Once cured the surface is cleaned and sealed. The sealer carries the color depth and protects the surface, and it needs renewing every few years.
What to know before choosing it
Stamped concrete cracks like any concrete, and a crack across a pattern is more visible than one in a plain broom finish. Control joints can often be hidden within the pattern lines.
Sealed stamped concrete can be slippery when wet. A non slip additive in the sealer is worth specifying for pool surrounds and steps.
Resealing is ongoing maintenance, generally every two to three years. Skipping it lets the color fade.

Does stamped concrete crack?
Yes, in the same way all concrete does. It shrinks while curing and moves with temperature and ground conditions.
Control joints are the answer, and on stamped work they can often be cut along a pattern line so they read as part of the design rather than as a cut across it.
Is stamped concrete cheaper than pavers or natural stone?
Generally yes. Stamped concrete typically costs less installed than natural stone and less than most paver systems, while producing a similar appearance from a normal viewing distance.
The trade off is repairability. A damaged paver is lifted and swapped. Matching a repair into stamped concrete so it is invisible is difficult.
How often does stamped concrete need resealing?
Every two to three years for most exterior installations, sooner on surfaces in full sun or heavy traffic.
The sealer carries the color depth and protects against moisture and salt. Letting it wear away is what makes stamped concrete look tired well before the concrete itself is worn.
