Concrete Driveways Built for Chester County Winters
A concrete driveway costs more than asphalt up front and generally outlasts it. It is also far less forgiving of shortcuts, because a concrete driveway that was poured too thin or jointed badly cannot be resurfaced. It has to come out.
The specifications that matter
Thickness. Four inches is the common residential minimum, and five to six inches is worth the difference where anything heavier than a car will park or turn. Delivery trucks, RVs and contractor vehicles crack four inch slabs.
Mix strength. Exterior concrete in a freeze and thaw climate wants a suitable mix with entrained air. Air entrainment builds microscopic bubbles into the concrete that give freezing water somewhere to expand, which is the single most important factor in whether a driveway survives Pennsylvania winters.
Reinforcement. Rebar or wire mesh does not stop concrete cracking. It holds the pieces in alignment when it does, which is the difference between a hairline you barely notice and two slabs at different heights.
Control joints. Concrete shrinks as it cures and it will crack. Control joints decide where. They need to be cut early, deep enough, and in panels of sensible proportion.
Base and drainage
Concrete needs a compacted, free draining base for the same reason asphalt does. A slab bridging a soft spot will crack across it regardless of how good the concrete was.
Grade matters just as much. A driveway that drains toward the garage or the house has created a water problem that will cost more to fix than the driveway did.
Concrete against asphalt
Concrete generally lasts longer, handles heat better, and offers finish options asphalt cannot. It costs more initially, repairs are harder to make invisible, and it is more sensitive to de-icing salt.
Asphalt costs less up front, goes down faster, tolerates ground movement better and is easy to resurface. It needs sealing on a schedule and it has a shorter life.

How thick should a concrete driveway be?
Four inches is the standard residential minimum for passenger vehicles. Five to six inches is worth specifying where heavier vehicles will park or turn, including delivery trucks, RVs and work vans.
The extra inch is a small percentage of the total job cost and it is the cheapest insurance available against cracking under load.
How long before I can drive on a new concrete driveway?
Foot traffic is generally acceptable after twenty four to forty eight hours. Keep vehicles off for at least seven days, and preferably ten.
Concrete reaches most of its design strength over about twenty eight days. It gains enough to carry a car well before that, but early loading is a common cause of cracking that shows up months later.
Will a concrete driveway crack?
Every concrete driveway develops some cracking. Concrete shrinks as it cures, and it moves with temperature and ground conditions after that.
Good work controls where cracks happen rather than pretending they will not. Properly cut control joints give the concrete a planned place to relieve stress, and reinforcement keeps the slab aligned so a crack stays a line rather than becoming a trip hazard.
Can I use rock salt on a concrete driveway?
Avoid it, especially during the first winter. De-icing salts accelerate surface scaling by driving repeated freeze and thaw cycles inside the top layer of concrete.
Sand for traction is safer. If you need a de-icer, calcium magnesium acetate is gentler on concrete than rock salt or calcium chloride. A quality penetrating sealer also helps considerably.
How long does a concrete driveway last?
Thirty to forty years is a reasonable expectation for a properly built concrete driveway in this climate, and many last longer.
That assumes adequate thickness, an air entrained mix, a compacted base and sensible winter care. Any one of those missing shortens it considerably.
